Unlimited Call pricing options- How to save mega money on your calls

Limitless/ Unlimited/ Straight Up/ Skype Subscription. Which one is the best for me?

With the different product offerings its easy to feel a little lost when deciding which contract to take out, here is Cool Ducks take on the matter.
  • Vodacom Red for R1,999 per month: Limitless calls, Limitless SMSs and 1.5GB of data (The data and the free sms's being the big positive in this deal but surely 1.5 gigs does not cost R700?). And who still sends sms's? Not many people.
  • Telkom Mobile Unlimited Voice for R1,199 per month: Unlimited calls, No SMSs, No data. (Remember its only 100 unique numbers for the month and your call gets billed after 1 hour. So drop the phone and call again :)
  • Cell C- Straight Up Infinity, for R999/month on a 24-month contract. The Catch: the rate applies only to on-network calls (ie calls to only the Cell C company). All other calls are billed at a rate of 99 cents per minute.
  • Skype contract: This duck took out one of these, for a cost of R147 a month, I get unlimited calls to landline numbers. Unfortunately skype does not have unlimited calls, released for mobile as yet. Their costs for mobile calls (prepaid system) are comparitive to our current mobile rates, so I would not really opt in for that especially since the call quality of skype can be unpredictable, depending on your location. For R147 though, I normally get the job done. And make most of my business calls to landline and call all my family on their landline numbers. I have definitely saved some dough through this method. Another big positive about the Skype subsciption is that you can opt out at any time. So if you are not going to use the deal during exam months, then unsubscribe. Bear in mind though that the average data cost for a Skype call sits at a figure of about R5. So making calls from an unlimited data source helps a lot.
  •   It boild down to your needs- just read through the fine print and make a decision depending on the needs of yourself and/ or your business.
Here are some of the funny Vodacom responses to Telkom's 'Limitless' adverts. I just love ad-wars.
